Chiang Khong deepwater port is an international port on the banks of the Mekong River. According to the Agreement on Commercial Navigation on Lancang-Mekong River, to promote trade and tourism between 4 countries: Thailand, China, Myanmar, and Laos.
It offers a water transport route from Chiang Khong Port through Chiang Saen and Chiang Rung (or Jinghong in Chinese) Port. Currently, it serves as the main export between Thailand and Laos.
Located at Ban Hua Wiang, Village No. 1, Tambon Wiang, Chiang Khong District, Chiang Rai, this port can support cargo ships from abroad. And is the only point of loading and unloading goods to Huay Sai town, which will use labor to do the lifting.
As can be seen, there will be Chinese ships transporting goods through the Chiang Saen Port to come up at this port; most products are consumer goods, supplies, and fruits.
There is a medium-sized ship of Lao nationality to support the loading and unloading of agricultural products. The small boats of Thai and Laos await tourists to cross the border, and Lao boats account for the most significant proportion of all vessels in the area. This port is 70 kilometers from Chiang Saen Pier.
The big port of Chiang Khong is also home to large car rafts that carry various cargos and cars to cross the Mekong to Laos and Southern China — and then take the R3A route, which is the main road in the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS).
It is located in Chiang Khong District in Chiang Rai province, opposite the Huay Sai City, Bokeo Province, Laos PDR, and was opened for service on December 1, 2003, with a transportation network within the country and abroad. A connection road between Chiang Khong District and Chiang Saen District in the back.
This international port has facilities such as a concrete jetty, truck parking area, the customs department, the excise department, the department of water transport, the navy, the Immigration checkpoint, animal and plant quarantine, public health checkpoints, which are open 24 hours a day.
At present, there are three ports in Chiang Khong District:
- Deep waterport, which is an international shipping port as mentioned above.
- Buck Pier, the Chiang Khong checkpoint, is a permanent Thai-Laos border crossing point. We can see the landscape of Huai Sai town in Bokeo Province, Laos. Thais travellers can cross the border to Laos by contacting the Chiang Khong District Office. You can travel along the Mekong by speed and slow boats to Luang Prabang, Vientiane, and back to Thailand at Nong Khai Province; the checkpoint is open every day.
- Pha Than Pier (Wat Chaisathan Pier) is not far from the Buck Pier, a small pier for loading and unloading. One of the most beautiful viewpoints on the Mekong River; tourist boats are available for charter.
