Chiang Saen Port, gateway to South China, is an international commercial port on the Mekong River in northern Thailand. This port has the potential and the readiness to support economic expansion.
It is essential for logistics in loading and unloading from the Agreement on Cooperation for Commercial Navigation in the Lancang and the Upper Mekong River, which consists of 4 countries: Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and Southern China.
Also, to enhance the efficiency of the water transportation system in this region and create economic stability, trade, and promote international investment. Moreover, there is a transport link down to Bangkok Port, Laem Chabang Port, and Ranong port for forwarding container products to other countries.

The opposite area in front of the port is Laos PDR. And at the back, there is a road that connects Chiang Saen and Chiang Khong District. The commercial ports of Chiang Saen are filled with Chinese merchant ships.
By boat, it will take the route along the Mekong River from Chiang Saen up to Yunnan Province. After that, the products will be distributed to various provinces in China.
With the lowest transportation cost and the most time saving, it is suitable for the entrepreneurs in the north and northeast Thailand who want to export products to China. Especially fuel Consumer goods, dried fruits, and agricultural products.
At present, there are two ports in Chiang Saen:
Chiang Saen Port #1 is a commercial port for providing tour boats and passenger boats service in the north. The Tambon Wiang Chiang Saen Municipality is the caretaker and administrator. It is located in the historical city of Chiang Saen, Moo 6, Tambon Wiang, Chiang Saen District, Chiang Rai. This area is an ancient zone with old city walls, old temples, and old pagodas to be preserved as a cultural heritage.
It has also coordinated with neighbouring countries to develop tourism by expanding water tour routes to the Golden Triangle, Luang Prabang, and Xishuangbanna. The Chiang Saen Port #1 was opened on October 1, 2003. Most of the tourists who come to use the service are both Thai and Chinese.
Chiang Saen Port #2 is a commercial port for cargo ships service and passenger boats, and the Port Authority of Thailand is the caretaker and administrator. It was built to support the volume of trade between Thailand and China that have increased growth.
Located at Ban Sob Kok, 888 Village No. 10, Ban San Sai Kong Ngam, Tambon Ban Saeo, Chiang Saen District. Chiang Rai. (which is to the south about 5 kilometers from the first port by waterway and about 10 kilometers by paved road) serviced on April 9, 2012.
The Chiang Saen Port #2 area has a landmark as a distribution center, and the interior also includes a 2-level ramp berth with two berths for general cargo handling.
